 Well, that’s nasty.

Took my husband in mine out to lunch, then the grocery store. Light trip on a beautiful day just to keep stuff moving.

Re: What have you done to/with your van today?

Postby icebrrg3rd » March 21st 2021, 3:37pm

Went for a drive and something followed me home. No matter how many twists and turns and speed changes I did, it stayed right on my tail.

2021-03-20_Venture01.jpg

It was about a 170 mile round trip, and I actually got about 15.7 mpg on it. Filled the tank before and after to get a fairly accurate calculation. Mind you, I get around 11-12 mpg normally, but that's city driving. And I mean real city driving, lots of stop signs, traffic lights, stop & go traffic, 25-30 mph speeds, idling, etc. This was on the interstate there and country roads back.

Right now this is 2/3rds of my stable, I will be getting rid of the Road Star (one in front) and the Maxim (not shown) as soon as I clean them up.

2021-03-20_VentureRoadStar01.jpg

2021-03-20_VentureRoadStar02.jpg

Now just need it to warm up a touch more so I can take it out for a good ride.

It's a 2001 Royal Star Venture (Yamaha), and being 20 years old, it qualifies for a COLLECTORs plate. Yay!

Bonus!

It also has a more comfortable queen seat - I assume that was the plan?

Got down to 25° here overnight, but it's 53° already today. I think it hit 55° yesterday. My husband went out and checked the tires on his Kawasaki before we took the van for lunch and groceries.

Sadly. I've done nothing to my van recently. I may start it up today if I'm up to it. I just spent 9 days in the hospital for a Crohns flare. Fast way to lose weight, 20 lbs in just the past 20 days alone, 53 lbs in the past 16 months, but I still give it zero stars. The side effects are horrible.

Oh, man. That sucks, Charlie.

Friend of mine in college had Crohn’s. She had a bad flare her freshman year and ended up in the hospital for a week. She had to be really careful what she ate and drank to avoid flareups after that. Hard to be a college student and not be able to eat pizza and drink beer...

Yes, along with other things. The Venture has a V-4, which is smoother than the Road Star's V-twin (they purposely made it like a Harley, shakes my fillings out). The Road Star is also more stretched out, a little too much for me, so for long hauls it's not comfortable. I also had an earlier version of the Venture, but the 1st gens look more like Goldwings and it was too upright for me, the 2nd gens are in-between that upright and stretched out seating, just right for me. It is only a 1300 vs the 1600 of the Road Star, but it has more than enough for what I need, and it will eat up the highway and backroad miles with ease.

The Drummer wrote:Nice bikes Iceberg , just curious tho , on the road star did you ever had to replace the starter clutch? .

No, I haven't had it that long, and with last year being mostly shut down I put less than 5k miles on it the few years I've had it. I just wasn't comfortable on it so I didn't ride it as much as my other bikes. It's still under 30k miles, not many for an '02, so the clutch is still good.

WoodButcher wrote:I think he bought them for the paint, what color is the third bike Andrew?

The Maxim was silver that I repainted (twice), blue & silver and currently black & green. As for the new bike, the bonus was the color, as I've only bought black helmets in the past but wanted something different, so for the Road Star I got a dark red helmet, now it still matches the new bike. And the bike even matches the van, just need to paint the trailer the same color...

I put air in the Astro’s tires and the Jeep’s tires, because my husband had the hose pulled out to fill the mower’s rear tires and the motorcycle’s front tire anyway. He took off the plow and installed the mower deck, in prep for the explosive grass growth that will happen shortly (it’s 65° and sunny today).

I got the 136 out!

104764

I got the 236 in!

104768

Putting aside the challenging electrical work, which I haven’t done, another plus to using the 236 is; you can replace the stock TC crash bar.

104770

On another note, while I was down there, I saw this:

104766

Anyone know what this might have done in the past? i didn’t follow it, because I was in hurry to test drive...no more low speed shudder!

The other cool thing is: you can take the lazy way out and just put your old tc encoder motor on it and it will work just fine.
It will also work if it had an operable encoder motor on it already!

That’s exactly what I did. I’m breaking it up into 2 projects. (Or more) I’m slow at all this stuff, so I couldn’t afford the down time to do both at the same time. This way I can make nice harnesses and mod the dash to take the switch without being in a hurry.

Next up is ... so many things.

So... I have a problem w/ the Drivers Door Unlock switch unlocking the Driver Door feature.
Everything else seems to work ( both drs lock both drs, Drvrs Dr unlocks Pass Dr, Pass Dr unlocks Both Drs ).

After chasing down wiring and taking harnesses/tape apart, I think ( know ) the wire is messed up between the driver door unlock switch and harness connector # C246 - above the drvr sd kick pnl.

I just wish I could find that C246 connector.

Image
2108 Drvr Lock - Conn opened & Wiring

Would like to wring out the wire between this (Blk/wht term.) and the C246 conn, but not going to happen...
I cannot find that 6 pos. Conn.

Image
2113 Drvr Lock - Comp loc & Wiring-2

The FSM shows everything that helps not getting it fixed.
If I could have located the C246 connector....

I would have felt more comfortable chasing the wire down the rest of the way and then running a replacement wire... fished from the connector all the way thru the "between door grommet/rubber conduit" and wrapped it w/ the rest of the OEM wiring.

My health says, paste it, butter it up, put the panels and wires back in place and don't worry 'bout the rest.
OK - so it will not unlock by the Driver's Door switch.
What about a fire in the grommet... Locks when it is closed... uhoh...

Yes, it sure looks like a probable broken wire or two in that harness between door and body.
My '98 book only shows some splices in that vicinity, but everything seems to be located in the area of the left side of the dash.
Your diagram shows things much differently, so I guess I am not much help.

Replaced the right backup light that’s been blown for a couple months, replaced the wiper blades, filled up the tank, filled up the washer reservoir with bug stuff, checked the oil, lubed the hood latch, cleaned the tires...

Just busy work to be outside on a beautiful day.
