Ignition cylinder tumbler change

Postby Astroneer97 [OP] » July 20th 2021, 11:21pm

I recently purchased an '05 Chevy Astro van and someone had previously tried to steal it. They drove a flat head screwdriver inside the ignition cylinder tumbler and broke off the faceplate. And now the key will not turn, is there still a way to remove the cylinder without turning it to the unlock hole in the top?

Short answer is NO. Longer answer: the lock cylinder needs to be turned in order to depress the pin that holds it into the steering column. Or, drill out the pin....CAREFULLY!

I work at a tow yard and we get tons of Silverados and Tahoe's that look like that. I always use my "universal Chevy key" for them (flathead screwdriver) and I've yet to have this method fail.

Some put up more resistance than others. Worth a shot imo before drilling the pin.
