Evap Canister

I've been chasing a SEL for the past few months. The codes point to the evap system. And, recently I began smelling fuel just after shutting off from driving in hot weather.
I changed the purge valve and I'm wondering if the canister itself may be worn or clogged. Where is the thing located and what's involved in removing it?

In my 89 it's in front of the battery, near the driver side headlamp.

In my '02 its on the frame piece right in front of the fuel tank, center of the van.

Black box with a large rubber hose and a couple small ones and an electrical connection clipped to the same frame piece.

Perfect, I'll crawl under my 02 and look for it. Have you needed to do any work on your evap system?

Nope, not on the '02.

The PO replaced the purge valve on my '00 at some point because the old one was in the drawer. And, dollars to donuts, that was the issue that threw the code on my '99. Never had to figure it out because it spun a bearing.

Replacing the evap purge valve on my 02 would have been a 20 minute job but rust on the bracket required attention from my Dremel tool. I believe I paid about 30 bucks for the valve.
