2002 Astro AWD - Codes P0101, P0137, and P0420

2002 Astro AWD - Codes P0101, P0137, and P0420

Postby Gu3nth [OP] » June 27th 2020, 9:45pm

Hello all! I’ve had my Astro for about two weeks and everything has been great up to today. I was driving at around 45 mph and the “Service Engine Soon” light came on. There was no obvious loss of power and the engine still seemed to be running okay. I went to a local auto parts store and pulled the codes and came back with three (P0101, P0137, and P0420). I cleared them, drove home, and they haven’t come back yet.

Could these all be related? I did a search for these codes but everyone else is reporting a loss of power. This is not true in my case, the van still seems to run fine. Where should I start with diagnosing these?

Background/relevant information: the van was recently serviced and no big issues were seen. The catalytic converter was falling apart so it was just replaced with a pipe. I have been driving the van like this for a little over a week before the codes came up today. I had the air box apart to replace vacuum hoses a few days ago and drove it about 100 miles after that with no codes until today.

I've bolded the reason for the P0420.

If that’s the reason though, why did it take over a week of driving to cause the code? Shouldn’t it have tripped sooner?

No. It has to go through a complete set of tests and conditions before it’ll set the code.

The cat on my ‘02 was killed by misfires before I bought it, but it didn’t show until a couple months later, driving to Buffalo, NY from MD. I’d clear it, it came back a day or two later.

Hmm, okay. Good to know. I didn’t know that the tests would take so many miles to register. Do you have any ideas on the other two codes? I’m guessing there won’t be any huge negative side effects to continuing to use the van for now, right?

P0101 is a MAF code, but on my '05 it meant that not enough air was flowing through because my cats were clogged. On my '02, the cats weren't clogged at all, they had just stopped working.

P0137 refers to the downstream sensor, which isn't showing any difference from the front sensors because the cat is gone.
