A year it will start getting louder. 2 it will fall apart. Just ballpark guesses.

 

Good to know. I will have to keep my ears tuned to notice it get louder. Can't afford a new muffler right now so hopefully it will last a while.

Yes but lets be fair. I read what happened. If it was a brand new muffler and it backfires it would look like that to. Just new metal hanging down instead of rusty.

 

I have had a hole like that in my muffler since I bought my van like 6 years ago. It's not an immediate concern and replacement will depend entirely on how many miles you put on your van. The muffler is likely still doing its job and the inlet or outlet pipes will probably rust through and snap before that hole becomes a major issue.

 

Noticed holes that size and more of them in mine 9 months ago, it's still quiet. I believe it's the original with 203,000 miles, can't complain about that.

 

That is good to know. My van is sitting at 165k miles and its the original muffler. Not sure how long the holes have been there though and I only drive it around 2 miles a day.
