Power door lock actuator

Have 2000 Safari & having issue with power door locks.

When they are activated (either to lock or unlock) sometimes they work just fine. Other times will seem weak and only push/pull the door lock mechanism part way so you can't be sure if the door is actually locked/unlocked. A definite thunk is heard indicating that the solenoid is being actuated. This first happened with the driver door so I pulled the interior panel and disconnected the linkage from the solenoid so I lock and unlock this door manually (dealer price for a new actuator was $80 each). A couple years later and now the front passenger side door is having this same problem. A little annoying to think you've locked the doors with the power lock switch and find that it didn't work. Passenger side slider and rear hatch (dutch doors) still working fine but if GM put cheap actuators in then I expect these to fail at some point too.

Anyone else have this issue? Is the best way to handle this to lubricate door lock mechanism or something else? Everything is factory and it hasn't been in any wrecks (tho I have taken it on some rough forest roads) so I'm not thinking that binds are the problem.

If replacing the actuators is the answer, maybe someone can suggest a good place that sells quality parts for less than dealer $ ?

Any replies or suggestions appreciated, Thanks

Hi jmx53

I had problems with my actuators getting a bit slow and not working properly. I opened the panels up and sprayed everything down with WD40 and that seemed to fix my problem. I have the original actuators in mine at the moment.

If you want or have to repalce yours, then rockauto.com has them listed for yours.

Dorman or Standard would be my suggestion to choose from.:)

You could also try the auto wreckers, I'm sure they would be cheaper. Just a thought.:)

I've had the exact same thing happen. I replaced all but the side door lock motors and it only worked for about a day.
It seems the "pulse" is sent, but its not long or strong enough to fully activate the motors. What next? Receiver board? Relay? Any diagrams and or instructions would be appreciated

I'm having this issue and it is definitely an electrical issue. The door lock actuator for the rear door was disconnected and the three other doors locked ok but if I reconnect it it's drawing some power so all of the doors lock halfway and I have to press the button a few times. Also the more I try without the car running and the worse it gets. Maybe a fresh new battery might help. Now that I think about it I haven't tried with the engine running.

Just came across this with my 2001

the original one would still move, but not enough to actuate the locking/unlocking mechanism.
so I took the door apart and lubed everything - still no joy
so I replaced the door lock actuator - still no joy

now I'm thinking relay? I can hear a clicking at the fuse panel when I actuate the door locks, so I'm thinking there is one there. Will have to bust out the factory manuals and trace it down. Perhaps replacing it with one with new/non corroded contacts might send enough juice to the actuators to make them work properly.

Did you replace a relay and get the locks working?
