Should I replace the Water Pump?

I've had my 2000 Astro AWD for 2 years now and the only major issue I've had is a tendency for it to get hot when temps are over 90 and I have the A/C on. I'm planning to replace the fan clutch and serp belt, plus install a tranny oil cooler. I just had the Dex changed 3 weeks ago and was wondering if I should go ahead and replace the Water Pump while I'm in there ?

It's a toss up. 9 yo water pump should be ok, but you never know. I'd lean more towards the thermostat and would do that anyway. Now the toss up, if your going to get that far into it. Water pump is around $150 +/-

WOW a water pump cost that much on the newer Vans? My '92 was only $38.

Did you have the cooling system flushed when you had the new fluid put in? I would try a new thermostat first and a tranny cooler is always a good idea.

You ain't kidd'n. I used to date a gal that did the books for a small local auto parts chain, 5-6 stores. She told me there is a 300-500% mark up.
I fixed a lot of things on my Toyota truck before we split up

Flush the cooling system first, then run it a few days and see what happens.... Last time I did a flush on an older car, it apparently cleaned the crap off the water pump that was keeping it sealed and it started leaking the next day, ( and the heater core apparently had a hole that was clogged with the same crap , 'cause the next day IT started leaking too.If it doesn't leak after that, leave it alone, lol.

Well, it looks like the A-1 Cardone new is $40.99 at CSK . That's $25 less than the fan clutch! If it's the original, it needs changed at that price.

When I worked at at local parts shop, my boss charged 30% over cost and still made solid money. The discounts to the customer, primarily Internet, were(are), still healthy...

wow thats a crazy amount for a clutch fan. i would go for the electric fan upgrade for that price. maybe 30 bucks at the yard and a relay and controller. plus the power upgrade.

I picked up a 16" Flex-a-Lite today w/ controller for $150.
It's good to still have friends in the parts biz. I know, I coulda bought something from the yard...
I'll install it tomorrow and maybe do the tranny cooler at the same time.
I've been wanting to do that for a while now, but as I have to tow a car to WA next friday, this is as good a time as any!
I'll just pull the old fan and clutch and wait on the pump for now.

Since I am having a leak with the "radiator" I figured I post in a existing topic, I don't think its the water pump since the leak appears to be coming from the radiator, I've taken the front end off the van, but didn't go past the radiator, (removing it). It appears to leaking from either the bottom of the radiator, or the top from my observation, and only leaks when the vehicle is running, not when its off. From looking at the Haynes manual for this model, I cant locate the water pump if that might be the cause of this issue, the picture looks like its attached to the engine, but with all the hoses, lines and all in the way, is the pump not visible to the eye, do i need to remove the whole entire radiator and hoses to see it?

The water pump is back behind the fan/fan clutch/S-belt pulley. I don't think you can really see it. On most engines of this style you'll see coolant coming from the front of the engine, leaking down towards the oil pan. If it's in the front of the van, dripping from the front cross-member, it's somewhere in the radiator or hoses. I like your "radiator". I was amazed when I got in there to install the E-fan that it was only 1 core thick. It's smaller than the rad on my Saab 9000! I almost used the pair of fans from a Saab 900T. Would have been a nice fit! As it is, I'll likely add the A/C fan from a 9000 to the A/C condenser just for a bit of extra push...
