What year fan?I just looked up a 98 and it saying blk the ground.But the other wires for low and high speed are different colors.

 

It's a lotta year, lotta Ford/Linc/Merc models. It's a Dorman fan so the colors aren't the same as the 93 Taurus.

I could pull it apart if I really have to but I don't want to have brushes doing the sproing dance or something similar. Nor do I want to just guess that BLK is ground, even though it's the odd pin.

Hook the Blk wire to chassis ground the the 12 volt wire to one of the other pins,, then to the other pin and see if you have 2 different speeds

 

Here's the confusion -

The WIRE colors in the Dorman fan don't match the wire colors in the Ford part. So what I'm trying to find out is "Which wire is ground, low speed and hi speed". If there's anyone with a Ford fan, of any model, maybe you could look at your connector? See which wire colors go to which pin on the connector.

I took the motor apart this morning. I'm not a motor expert.

Here's looking into the armature. Two sets of commutators, one larger diameter than the other.

UPPer (smaller diameter) commutator brushes. Each set of opposing two brushes goes to either the BRO/ONG or the BRO/YEL wire. So each 90 degrees of rotation, that brush is the "other" color wire.

LOWer (larger diameter) commutator brushes (shown upside down). Each set of opposing brushes on this one are either BRO/YEL or BLK. Each 90 degrees is the "other" color wire.

So are there any motor experts?
Or anyone that owns a Ford with an elec fan?

OK, I'm seeing black is ground, that's the important thing, the other two are hi/low speed, so you can hit/miss those to figure out which is which.

Does the motor run on one of the two commutators in LOW speed and then on the other commutator in HI speed?

I just don't know much about elec motors.

I believe that low speed is 1 wire and high speed is both. By looking at the pic, black looks ground because the black lead runs over to the other side and looks like it connects both sides together, where as each colored wires are on one side only.

 

A little help for ya

Make sure it is wired so that only one fan is on at a time , otherwise the life of fan will be shortened ,, use 2 relays ,, Ford used a 75 amp , but 30, 40 and 50 amp have also been used pics courtesy of the web

The 2 relays are Ford Taurus OEM fan relays. The 87A contacts are normally closed. When the van's ignition is switched on, relay #1 is energized and sends power to the 87 contact and on to relay #2. Relay #2 then sends that power to the 87A contact and on to the fan low speed. When the thermostatic switch is activated it will switch the second relay to the 87 contact activating the fan high speed.

To wire the manual on/off switch, add a wire in between the van's switched power wire and the #1 relay. . The LED is wired to the normally closed 87A contact on the #1 relay. Use the relay to cut power to the LED when the van is off, otherwise it will blink when the van is off.

 

I have verified the color code/pinouts of the Dorman 620-101 fan. Hooked it up to a battery through a 100A circuit breaker, wore a face shield and looked away while I touched the final contact to the battery in case the thing exploded.

It didn't.
