The charcoal canister in my 95 is behind the driver's headlight. The air vent has a rubber hose on top of the tank that connects to a steel line above the tank. I never followed it any further than that. It was kinked when I got me van, I had to cut a few inches out of it to get the tank to fill at a normal rate.

 

In the 2000, I believe the filler hose is actually inside the bigger hose, the space between is the vent. I think.

 

My 89 has both what Leeann and BigKid describe. Double wall gas filler pipe and a long hose to the front canister near the driver's headlamp. The one near the headlamp is the one that goes bad when you don't pass smog.

Lump

 

Mine does this only at certain fuel stations and at certain pumps at these stations. In my case, I think is more the pump nozzle (CA has those PITA nozzles with vapor return bellows) than the van's filler and vent.

Before locking the nozzle on, I have to lift up on the hose and hold the nozzle to angle it downward to keep it from snapping off.

 

thx but im not finding anything behind driver headlamp other than battery. Maybe air is vented out the top of tank while fueling..I have a screwed up back so its hard to get right under to see stuff. I will take it to a shop i guess.

 

Evap canister is underneath, almost center. You'll see big black hoses going to it.

 

thx leeann_93 So I guess I have to drop the tank to get at the hose or hope the issue is at the cannister. I am also having an issue with the fuel gage as its either showing full or empty and low fuel light comes on, maybe they are related?

 

That's either the sender (in the pump assembly) or in the gauge.

Sooner or later we all do. Might as well do it on your own terms (nearly empty tank etc, vs out on the side of the road in the ghetto at night).

It's really not difficult in the least, as long as you don't have a tank full of gas.

The problem, I think, is the fuel stations rocket propelled fuel pumps. They have them pump way too fast so they WILL shut off with a full tank and not pump all over the platform. My '98 was awful as it seems somebody had fooled with it trying to fix it and made it worse. I bought one from the J/Y and made it better but locally I still shop for a station with the slowest pump and buy my fuel there.

 

Are ya in CA? I have trouble with a lot of the gas stations around here .. Same van, no problems when I lived in Georgia.

I think the nozzles in CA are wayy more sensitive to vent gasses. Probably due to stricter emissions standards, yadda yadda
