If you are going to go to all the trouble of installing expensive performance headers.. why not consider true dual exhaust?

This photo always impresses me!
(tube size in this photo might be wrong for a V6)

Here's another one (not mine):

Long (proper diameter) pipes (BEFORE mufflers) are instrumental in scavenging effect and flow... just as they are in the header design. If not dual-mufflers, then maybe something like this??

I guess these examples don't show cats, but I'm sure they'd fit too.

As cool as that would be, would there really be any gain over the 2.5" catback setup I have now? It would rack up a lot more cost, plus I've already paid for my current setup. The headers were only $250. My thinking is that the biggest restrictions are the exhaust manifolds, the Y pipe, and the cat, since I already have a freeflowing muffler and 2.5" from the cat back.

Yes the biggest improvement IS the headers!
Best bang for the buck!

Esp if you could get long tubes to fit in there.

Here are the Pace Setter Part# 72C1355 headers. Mild steel with "Armorcoat" ceramic coating. Pretty nice for $250. They're even CARB certified, which is kind of crazy for that price. Too bad nothing else on the van is because it started life on the East Coast where the laws are more relaxed, lol.

Thanks again to @akforceten for paving the way on these in another thread.

I'll update the thread after I get around to installing them.

I have a set of JBA short tube headers on AWD. I'll have to pull the file and see what model Number but they were purchased through summit racing.
I spent an additional $75 at a custom exhaust shop to have them modify my y-pipe.

It would be great if you can post that model #, hopefully this thread will help others in the future. I've wanted headers since I got the van, but didn't think any would fit until now.

Did you have any body lift before installing them or stock suspension? Curious if it cleared everything without a lift, I don't believe the pacesetter ones would, but I don't know for sure.

JBA 1840-S3.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/jba- ... del/blazer

I have the 3" subframe body lift, relocated upper ball joint, re indexed torsion keys and 31" tires. I didn't buy these before I lifted the van so I don't know if they would fit. I also deleted my egr set up so I could use this model header. I couldn't find pthe ones you posted that have the egr connection.

I also took mine to a exhaust shop to have my Y-pipe modified.

I have installed JBA short tube headers, going through a Magnaflow performance cat and through a magna flow muffler.
I'll post a pic shortly

Keep up the good work!

Awesome info.

That sounds similar to what I'm going to do with the pacesetter headers, only i'm going to do a 2.25" Y pipe, but I have the same magnaflow cat & muffler. I'm curious, what kind of performance gains did you notice? Was it more low end torque or more top end or both?

It's hard for me to tell how much the headers added because i installed them at the same time I installed a RV grind camshaft, port and polished heads, the engine was bored .015" over, the internals were all balanced and I have 4.10 ring and pinions installed. The van overall does get up and go. I built it up to give good midrange performance.

awhile back i looked at what i might be able to get in a direct replacement y-pipe & catalytic converter that should work with the JBA headers i got. the best thing i came up with was a magnaflow # 23410 (fits 1996 thru 1999 astro/safari, not for california).
:text-link: https://www.magnaflow.com/products/...-epa-compliant-direct-fit-catalytic-converter
it's all stainless steel & should bolt up to the headers. the prices i found at the time were all around the $400 list price. my whole stock exhaust is still tight & quiet & i don't want to cut it all off yet. i did save the 23410 listing i found on amazon in my wish list for future reference. today i saw the price has gone WAY DOWN, $159.25 shipped!!

i can't imagine it getting much cheaper - i think i'll get one & stash it with the headers - i don't know if these things have a shelf life/expiration date.....hope not

i went ahead and ordered the magnaflow 23410 y-pipe & cat while it was on sale.

here's pics of the pipe :

the pipe looks good with nice bends, the welds look ok, the inlets match up fine with the header outlets.

.
i'll stash the pipe with the headers and start looking for a quiet muffler that won't cork it all up.
